Red Spotted

british shorthaired red spottedThis is another colour that is seen as a moggie colour as most of us are familiar with the erstwhile ginger tom that patrols our streets. The orange colour makes them very noticeable and in most cases they are toms. The red gene is called a sex linked gene and because of the way that it works, most red or cream cats and kittens tend to be male. To breed a female red or cream, it requires that the male is this colour and that the female is at least a tortoiseshell (tortie*) or already a red or cream. A British red spotted has a warmth about the colour that is not present in the moggie world. Autumn - red spotted femaleThere is a possiblity that the colour can be very hot and vibrant or slightly paler more towards a ruby orange colour. The red and cream colour kittens always have markings when they are born and depending on the pedigree, can fade, although a true spotted kitten will not loose it's spots. There are moves in the cat world to breed a red self (all one colour) but I have yet to see an adult cat that has a true self coat with no markings. A cream self does exist but where the red is concerned this is proving to be a tall order. Mother Nature seems to insist that reds retain their markings.

*This means that the queen is a mixture of colours. Blue and cream or black and red
